OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Review, Price and Specifications

-

Oppo is not a well-known brand for most users, but since its appearance, the company has brought a good number of interesting smartphones. Its latest launch in the high range has been the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom, which features its triple camera with wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and 5x optical zoom / 10x hybrid that competes the Huawei P30 Pro When it comes to taking pictures of distant objects.

Oppo has not neglected the rest of the features. The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom comes with a 6.6″ AMOLED display, Snapdragon 855 processor, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, triple rear camera (48MP “f/1.7” + 8MP “f/2.2” + 13MP “f/3.0”), front camera 16MP “f/2.0” and battery 4,065 mAh

In a short time, the Chinese brand has shown that they are able to manufacture smartphones that have little to envy to those of the big manufacturers. The OPPO Reno 10x Zoom is its latest high-end smartphone and it does not disappoint at all.

Starting with its design, the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom has an attractive appearance, with a large 6.6″ screen surrounded by narrow frames. Instead of resorting to a notch or a hole in the screen, the company has opted for a pop-up camera mechanism.

Unlike other smartphones whose camera emerges vertically, the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom front camera opens as if it were a fan.

The OPPO Reno 10x Zoom front is protected by Gorilla Glass 6 and offers a high screen-to-body ratio, around 93.1% according to OPPO (or 86.8% if we trust GSMarena).

The glass back has a matte finish with certain shine details and is completely smooth, with no protruding element.

The OPPO Reno 10x Zoom is a device of great size and considerable weight since it has a thickness of 9.3 mm. and a weight of 215 grams. Therefore, if you don’t like bulky smartphones, you should look elsewhere.

The phone has a 6.6″ AMOLED panel with Full HD + resolution, which indicates a pixel density of 387 dpi. This pixel density is high enough to make the screen look very sharp, so we don’t miss a higher resolution.

The screen offers a wide color range as it covers all of the sRGB and DCI P3 color ranges, and also has excellent color fidelity. The color temperature is somewhat above the reference value but can be adjusted manually without a problem.

Now, the maximum brightness of the screen is somewhat poor since, with 426 nits, it is below other high-end smartphones that we have tested. In addition, it does not have a brightness enhancement mode in Automatic mode for when we are under intense light.

OPPO has included a limited Always Active Screen mode as it only shows the time/date and call/SMS notifications. Since there is no notification LED, it is necessary to turn on the lock screen to see if we have pending notifications.

What OPPO has incorporated is the ambient screen, which turns on the screen when a notification arrives, and double tap on the screen to turn it on immediately. Another interesting feature of the screen is the visual anti-fatigue mode (DC Dimming) that prevents annoying screen flickering when the brightness level is very low.

OPPO has incorporated a fingerprint reader under the screen that allows you to unlock the phone just by resting your finger on it, provided we have turned on the screen before (for example, by double-tapping or lifting the phone from the table).

The fingerprint reader is quite reliable when identifying the fingerprint, although it is important to support a good part of the finger in the reading area. The unlocking process is fast, although not as much as that of the OnePlus 7 Pro.

The OPPO Reno 10x Zoom has excellent specifications as it has a Snapdragon 855 processor, 8 GB of LPDDR4x RAM, and 256 GB UFS 2.1 storage.

In tests, the smartphone has obtained excellent scores in all tests, as expected given its hardware. In the day-to-day, it moves with extreme fluidity and I have not noticed signs of lag or slowness in any app.

The latest games are not a problem for this smartphone either. I have been able to measure stable rates of 30 or 60 FPS in games like Asphalt 9, Dead Effect 2 or PUBG.

The OPPO Reno 10x Zoom allows you to expand the storage by micro-SD card if we give up the second SIM card, although with 256 GB you should not have much trouble to save all your photos and videos.

In the aspect of connectivity, it is well served with WiFi 802.11 b / g / n / ac at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, Bluetooth 5.0, 4G / LTE and, luckily, also NFC. The only notable absence at this point is the FM radio.

The smartphone has a battery of 4,065 mAh that offers excellent autonomy, so you will have no problem reaching the end of the day with relatively intense use of the phone.

OPPO has included fast charging VOOC 3.0 at 25W. It is not as fast as the Super VOOC of Oppo Find X but allows you to charge the phone in less than 90 minutes.

Unfortunately, it does not have wireless charging, something that almost all high-end smartphones incorporate.

In the multimedia aspect, OPPO has incorporated stereo speakers in the earpiece and the bottom of the phone, which a quite powerful sound even though a greater richness of tones are missing.

OPPO has removed the 3.5mm jack, so you’ll have to turn to a Bluetooth headset or a 3.5mm USB-C adapter. It has Dolby Atmos, which provides greater depth to the sound if we use wired headphones since it is not compatible with Bluetooth headphones.

At the software level, it comes with Android 9 Oreo and, above, the ColorOS 6.0 customization layer. This layer adds a large number of features that complement Android like granular permissions for apps, cloning of applications for multi-account, gestures on the screen, encryption of applications and safe to protect files.

Among the new features of the new ColorOS version is the possibility of using an application drawer, in case you don’t like all the apps to be on the desktop.

OPPO has also added a driving mode that activates when the phone has been connected to the car Bluetooth receiver and blocks notifications, reminders and certain calls to avoid distractions behind the wheel.

Also worth noting is the Game Space functionality that improves performance by allocating more hardware resources and limiting the network activity of other apps. In some games like PUBG, it optimizes performance to improve the FPS rate and reduce the delay of keystrokes on the screen.

In the photographic section, the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom has a very versatile triple rear camera consisting of a main camera of 48MP f/1.7 OIS, a 5x/10x telephoto camera of 13MP f/3.0 OIS and an ultra-wide-angle camera of 8MP f/2.2.

OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Review, Price and Specifications

By default, the main camera uses pixel binning to capture photos at 12MP, although it offers a super high-resolution mode that takes the full resolution of 48MP to get sharper photos – although not much more than conventional photos.

In good light conditions, the images taken by the main camera are crisp and colorful and, when light is scarce, the snapshots maintain good image quality. Like any camera worth its salt, it offers scene detection features by AI, although the retouching is very complex.

The ultra-wide-angle camera is my favorite when taking pictures of landscapes or monuments, as it offers a totally different perspective. The drawback is that, in low light conditions, the quality suffers from the absence of optical stabilization and a more limited opening.

Finally, the telephoto camera is the most innovative because it offers a 5x optical zoom and 10x hybrid that allows us to approach distant objects and obtain good quality photographs. Now, we must bear in mind that more zoom is not always better.

The camera also allows you to take pictures in Portrait mode and, in tests, the result has been good although on some occasions the result looks artificial and, when using the main camera, the close-ups show some deformation of the face. One aspect I like is that the degree of background blur increases with distance, making it more realistic.

The main camera can record 4K video up to 60 fps with good image quality, but it is not possible to record video with either of the other two cameras. As a curiosity, if you zoom in when you record video, the sound focuses on the object or person you are pointing at.

The front camera has a resolution of 16MP, so it is able to capture selfies with great sharpness. In addition, this camera also allows you to capture photos in Portrait mode and the result is acceptable.

Is it worth buying the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom? If you are looking for a smartphone with a modern design, a large screen, very powerful hardware, good autonomy, and a very versatile camera, the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom is undoubtedly a great option.

The Best and Worst of OPPO Reno 10x Zoom

The Best:

  • Full-screen design without notches or holes that obstruct vision. Attractive finish in glass and metal.
  • AMOLED display with high sharpness, excellent contrast, wide sRGB / DCI-P3 color range, and HDR support.
  • Fluency in the use of the phone thanks to very powerful hardware: Snapdragon 855, 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of storage. Excellent thermal performance (performance hardly degrades after prolonged use).
  • ColorOS software with features that extend the benefits of Android 9 Pie: app cloning, app encryption, screen gestures, safe, driving mode, game space, etc.
  • Fingerprint reader under the screen that quickly unlocks the phone (although it is necessary to turn on the screen first).
  • High performance of the main camera and competent Portrait mode (although you cannot edit the blur afterward)
  • Stereo sound with good power and Dolby Atmos
  • 5X and ultra-wide-angle telephoto camera to capture those elements that, otherwise, we could not photograph.
  • High autonomy and fast charging VOOC 3.0
  • NanoSIM + nanoSIM / microSD hybrid slot
  • NFC support

The Worst:

  • The device of considerable size and weight, not suitable for people with small hands
  • Display with maximum brightness below other high-end phones
  • Always active screen very limited (calls/SMS only) and absence of LED
  • Video recording limited to the main camera (neither ultra-wide-angle nor zoom)
  • Without the super-fast Super VOOC charging, we saw in the Oppo Find X or wireless charging
  • Without 3.5mm headphone jack or FM radio
  • No resistance to water and dust
