According to a patent, the Chinese technology giant is developing a 5G SIM card that is capable of both connecting to the network and serving as storage.
The new patent details a memory card that also serves as a SIM card. Therefore, it is quite similar to the “SIM super card” that was announced by Ziguang in China last year and has been adopted by some operators in that country.
To allow both functionalities, this new SIM card offers the technology of a memory card on one side and components for a 5G mobile communication on the back.
The implications of this technology could be interesting for the smartphone industry. While some manufacturers offer additional memory card slots, sometimes at the cost of dispensing with a second SIM, this new technology could provide additional storage without sacrificing space.
In addition, it would also allow easier migration of user data when changing smartphone. Obviously, the success of this SIM card will depend on the operators offering it to their customers as an alternative.
